Paul Michael Lützeler (Frankfurt: Suhrkamp, 1995). 16 Elias Canetti, Das Augenspiel. Lebensgeschichte 1931–37 (Munich: Hanser, 1985), 160. Cited as A. INTRODUCTION 17 E 21 Before his death in 1994, Canetti edited Veza Canetti’s novel Die gelbe Straße (Munich: Hanser, 1989), which had first been published in 1933/34 in the Vienna Arbeiter-Zeitung, her drama Der Oger (Munich: Hanser, 1990), and her collected short prose under the title Geduld bringt Rosen (Munich: Hanser, 1991). The title story had been included in Wieland Herzfelde’s anthology Junge deutsche Autoren (Berlin: Malik, 1932).

Then, too, there was Canetti’s wrath with which we might have had to contend. As Erich Fried relates in Ein Dichter gegen Macht und Tod, the German television documentary made in the wake of Canetti’s receipt of the Nobel Prize, Canetti could be harsh and voluble with those who dared to criticize — or as Canetti deemed it, to “misunderstand” — his work. ”23 But no longer. Dagmar Barnouw, as is well known, provided the first comprehensive treatment of Canetti’s oeuvre, the immensely useful 1979 24 Metzler handbook.

12 Though he accepted the status of honorary citizen of Vienna in 1986, Canetti steadfastly refused all attempts to repatriate him, retaining the British passport he received as a refugee from fascist Austria. Chancellor Vranitzky remarked candidly on this, but still found reason to celebrate Canetti’s important 13 connection to Austria. ” Like numerous other obituarists, Vice Chancellor Busek fêted Canetti as the last representative of the brilliant Viennese modernist movement, the “Wiener Moderne,” taking his cue perhaps from Canetti himself, who remarked at the Nobel ceremony that he accepted the honor on behalf of those great Austrian 15 writers, such as Kraus, Broch, and Musil, who never received it.
