In 1893, Lady Aberdeen helped found the National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC). This group was a non-partisan federation of voluntary women’s organizations, devoted to improving the status of women and children. Another group dedicated to advocating for change was the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) – an organization that believed that women’s participation in government and society would bring an end to the social and economic problems caused by alcohol.

It had one general store, two taverns, a church, and a school. A far cry from well-settled Ottawa and pastoral Wakefield, where neighbours were usually only a mile apart. Yet, despite the “disadvantageous circumstances” described by the Chaloner brothers, William did manage to prosper, becoming an “influential citizen” according to Biographical Sketch of Wellington County. Unfortunately, William wasn’t able to enjoy his success for long. In 1867, only six years after the family settled in Minto, William McAdams died at the age of sixty-seven.

On August 21, 1872, the two men met for the debate in Sarnia’s market square on Christina Street. Robert and Catherine might well have had ringside seats. They lived only a few blocks from the square and it was improbable that Robert, representing the town’s Conservative newspaper, would have missed the contest between the two leaders. Macdonald was in fighting form. He had arrived at the Sarnia docks the night before in the gunboat Prince Edward. Crowds poured into the square early in the day. Everyone wanted to be within hearing distance of the two titans.
