Not that I was a victim at this point. But I felt like one, unenlightened as I was. I was back in the gay community. But I was a lot more convinced that I wasn’t going to turn back from being gay. I just felt that the gay community could use my talents and leadership skills in some capacity. So when I had an opportunity to get reinvolved in the gay community, it was 100 percent. And I found myself helping other people to see a new way. Joe Liberatore: I knew I was gay from as far as back as I could possibly remember.

The daily routine of WGTB was uneventful until 1970, when a ten-person collective decided to take over the programming: They changed the format overnight, making a hard left turn to the rock of Jefferson Airplane, progressive electronic music, and avant-garde jazz. Announcements for campus dances were replaced with dark, subversive political bulletins. If the “pigs” arrested a member of the Black Panthers or the “liberators” held off the “imperialist forces” in North Vietnam, listeners heard about it.

And it was mixed with music and it was really slickly produced. Lucia was a volunteer at KPFK at the time. I don’t even remember the specifics of 36 QUEER AIRWAVES how she became involved, but she was the first lesbian on IMRU then, which happened kind of naturally, both from the political consciousness of the men who were doing the show, plus the fact that we were finally attracting some women. At one point, IMRU had maybe twenty, twenty-five volunteers and it was run as a collective. Needless to say, my experience and my contacts with many of the local community were limited before doing IMRU, but they obviously expanded.
