If you decide to go caving, never go alone. Keep the group together. Take at least two sources of light per person (some cavers also carry a candle and a good supply of matches). Wear a hardhat, preferably with a lantern on it so your hands can be free. If you encounter a bear or a mountain lion: Stay away from it. Give it a chance to escape. Do not run. The animal may think you are prey. Do not crouch or bend over. Make yourself look as large as possible by raising your arms or spreading your jacket.
Today, British Columbia boasts a population of just over three million. It is one of the richest provinces in Canada. Its coastline is dotted with islands and perforated by fjords. Its largest city, Vancouver, is the third largest, and the largest seaport, in all of Canada. And its quaint capital, Victoria, is a tourist's delight. The reservations encompass a total of nearly three million acres. The Washington Territory was created in 1853. It included not only Washington, but parts of modern-day Idaho and Montana. Ten years later (1863), the Idaho Territory also was spun away from Oregon. On 14 February 1859, Oregon became America's 33rd state. Washington Smaller in size than Oregon but more populous, Washington encompasses 66,582 square miles and has a 157-mile coastline. Its western regions receive some of the highest rainfall totals in the country, while the center of the state is dominated by the Cascade Mountain Range.
