This is the doctrine of conditions. According to this doctrine, it is not every day that a new philosophy is created – a space of compossibility must be conceptually constructed for four truth procedures, one political, one scientific, one amorous and one artistic. Without one of these conditions philosophy dissipates; that is, one may have an apparently philosophical text, but one will not have a philosophy (MP 35). This relatively complicated genesis immediately generates some easy diagnostic tools to apply to other would-be philosophies.
Why, then, these four conditions? And what does Badiou make of them? I begin by sketching some problems with Theory of the Subject, in order to suggest why Badiou would find that text questionable enough to radically renovate his own thinking, and propose how Jacques Lacan proves instrumental in this renovation. I proceed with an account of how the concept of “conditions” constitutes a rupture in Badiou’s thought, and conclude by determining the key traits of this concept and its consequences. Badiou’s problem Theory of the Subject is an extremely ambitious book.
What matters here is what kind of philosophy results from the procedure of conditioning: what does a “unified conceptual space” for the “nomination of events” look like (MP 37)? In the introduction to Being and Event Badiou claims that philosophy is a “circulation through the referential”. By Logics of Worlds, he speaks of his “system”, infamously leaving the trouble of joining the category-theory construction to the early set-theoretical construction to his exegetes (LW 39). 4 If each condition demands its own type of philosophical capture – Badiou does not present set theory in the same way that he interprets poems – and produces its own infra-philosophical discourse – “ontology”, “metapolitics”, “inaesthetics” – then the term “compossibility” refers to a massive problem for the philosopher.
