Golding’s other 1956 publication was the story “Envoy Extraordinary,” one of three stories in Sometime, Never: Three Tales of the Imagination, with John Wyndham and Mervyn Peake contributing the other two. It is a science fiction tale of a Roman emperor who, having been offered a steamship, explosives, and a printing press by an inventor, saves the civilized world from the evils of industrialism, worldwide warfare, and inferior, mass-produced books.
