within the northern Appalachians, the boundary among the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian structures falls inside of a fancy sedimentary series unfold throughout a rapidly-subsiding depositional trough and an adjoining, extra strong craton margin. Sediment resource parts lie in a more-or-less non-stop semicircle from southeast to north of the basin. furthermore, the higher Mississippian-Lower Pennsylvanian series is interrupted via wide erosion regarding epeirogenic upwarping of the sector. Biostratigraphically, the systemic boundary is put on the first incidence of the floral shape Neuropteris pocahontas (D. White) of floral area four as outlined by way of learn and Mamay (1964). notwithstanding, due to the common disconformable nature of the touch, the basal Pennsylvanian plant life is usually more youthful.

The purpose of this field trip is to examine the thick sequence of Carboniferous strata exposed in the Appalachian basin--the principal coal mining area in the eastern United States. Discussion enroute will emphasize the lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of select outcrop sections. An interesting and controversial aspect of Carboniferous stratigraphy in the Appalachian basin is the boundary relationship of the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian Systems.

2, and No. 2A coal beds. The major lobes of the middle member are superimposed over those of the lower sandstone member. Sand at the distal edges of the lobes was reworked and winnowed by waves and longshore currents and, as a result, the barrier system is thickest just seaward of the major distributary lobes. Continued marine regression during deposition of the upper part of the middle sandstone member was accompanied by a northwestward progradation of sand in distributary channels over and beyond the barrier system.
