The philosophy of science is a discipline that became independent of its object of study, namely the practice of science. It is not very old, though philosophers such as Plato or Aristotle, for instance, dealt explicitly with science-related problems. Philosophy itself is as old as the world, and scientific investigation has always been very close to philosophy in the past. In the beginning, philosophy was positioned as a ‘proto-science’. When other fields became increasingly important, such as astronomy or later psychology, the different domains started to shift away.
