In turn, the challenge mounted by Illinois Republicans produced the most complete evidence regarding the conduct of the election and the significance of irregularities in its conduct and in the vote count. This book is about the 1960 elections and election irregularities in Illinois, especially in Chicago. But the perspective on the election and its irregularities is that of local (Chicago) and state (Illinois) politics. This approach is taken because the historical evidence is strongly convincing that state and local forces, not national ones, determined the path of the campaign, the election, and its aftermath.
