His self-declared aims are to theorise masculinities and to enact pro-feminist political strategies. Methodologically, his analysis is strongly informed by the work of Harding and Frankenberg in developing a feminist standpoint and in grounding theorising in the experience of oppression (Harding, 1987; Frankenberg, 1993). Consequently, his work includes an empirical study of pro-feminist men’s subjectivities through consciousness-raising and memory-work. Pease’s analysis is also informed by the rise of poststructural and postmodern forms of feminism, which both problematise subjectivity and attempt to deconstruct any kind of unitary gendered identity.
The motor driving this shift is the industrial revolution, which creates fatherhood as Saturnine, and feeds the growth of the greedy entrepreneur, the reckless settler and the 1950s model of the provider (perceived by Bly as a ‘bluff’) as more contemporary and acceptable forms of masculinity, which in turn dissolve into the Soft Man in touch with his feminine side.
