In 1454 Bohemian King Ladislav Pohrobek expelled the Jews from the royal towns of Brno, Olomouc, Znojmo, Uničov (Mährisch-Neustadt), and Jihlava (Iglau) in Moravia, and Jews did not resettle in these towns in large numbers until the second half of the nineteenth century. Most then moved to and settled in smaller feudal towns or to the rural estates of the nobility, where they practiced a trade or peddled goods. As a result, in the fifteenth century many Jews in Moravia lived directly under the protection of local nobles scattered across numerous small estate towns, especially in southern Moravia.
