However, I argue in this book that the current direction of feminist theory reinforces abstraction as the principal building blocks in academic feminist practice. Howson and Inglis (2001) identify three moves of particular importance in the conceptual development of the body in sociology. First, there exists a move to ‘bring the body in’ to the sociological frame. A second move seeks to rediscover the body in classical theory. A third move attempts to establish the body as the conceptual centrepiece of sociology in an effort to achieve integration between ‘troublesome’ dualisms.
