It seems like newcomers have always been captivated by the peaks. Take the story of John Brown, who was among a group of four pioneers to explore the tallest peak overlooking the Salt Lake Valley less than a month after the Mormons arrived. It took one day to ride horses to the foothills. M. on August 21, 1847, they began to walk up the face of Broads Fork Twin Peaks. They traveled lightcarrying no food, guns, coats or bedrolls. Eight hours later, Brown's journal explains, they ascended the west peak of Twin Peaks.

Canyon names still reflect this 20-year era"China Row" for an area where Asian railroad builders camped, and "Temple Fork" where logs were taken for the edifice. All this activity introduced whole families to the canyon. Mormon men sent to work at sawmills had their wives and children visit. There were Sunday religious services, holiday celebrations, and dancing every day of the week. Charles O. Card, supervisor of the temple construction, remembers a visit when millhands were square dancing. A bow tied on the arm indicated which men played the role of "lady," according to Melvin A.

Drive 23 miles to the intersection with Clear Creek, but continue toward Fairview. This road is now US Route 264 going west. From the intersection drive about 5 miles to the Emery County boundary sign and the summit of Eccles Canyon. This puts you on Trough Springs Ridge. Park and begin skiing on the snow-covered dirt road to the left. Follow this road until it crosses the ridge leading to Monument Peak, then hike to the summit, which has a hut with a radio tower on top and a large rock cairn. This area is used heavily by snowmobilers.
