This effective nuclear charge depends on the values of n and l of the electron of interest because electrons in different shells and subshells approach the nucleus to different extents. The reduction of the true nuclear charge to the effective nuclear charge by the other electrons is called shielding. The effective nuclear charge is sometimes expressed in terms of the true nuclear charge and an empirical shielding constant, ␴, by writing Zeff ϭ Z Ϫ ␴. The shielding constant can be determined by fitting hydrogenic orbitals to those computed numerically.
